The Gospel gives hope to a shaky Sumatra

The Island of Sumatra is a place that has been in the focus of media for the last year after the terrible disaster that struck the northern tip of the island on the 26^th of December of 2004. Sumatra and its population has, on top of the terrible devastation which the Tsunami caused, been hit by several earthquakes of different magnitudes. As you certainly understand, the population has been shaken both in their souls as well as in their spiritual beliefs. Fear of what the future might bring is many times holding its tight grip around a large part of the population.

For us to bring the gospel message of hope and faith, proclaiming that Jesus has all the power in heaven and on earth, that He has a plan for every person on Sumatra, is a great privilege that we do not take lightly. The gospel message, that His power is enough to take any person trough any possible circumstance is really what this island needs more that ever before. Yes, people have physical needs, but people also need hope, something to believe in which is un-shakeable. Jesus is the rock that cannot be shaken, the only one that really can give hope. He is the only true hope for a suffering world.       

Already the first night a great multitude was gathered to listen to the preaching of the gospel. When the invitation went out for people to receive Christ into their lives the response was overwhelming. I was very surprised about the great openness that we already experienced the first night of the seven nights. During the whole event a total of 19,700 people signed the commitment cards as a sign of their willingness to follow Jesus. All of them received our follow-up material, teaching them the basic foundations of a life with Christ.

The miracle of salvation is the greatest miracle there is. To lead people from darkness to light, from death to life is the very driving force behind every mission endeavour we commit ourselves to.

Jesus also promised us to confirm the gospel by various signs, wonders and miracles. We have seen this happening time after time. Also in Siantar we experienced how the Lord was performing many wonderful miracles as He was healing many sick people.

Wherever we look around, we can see great opportunities to help the people of Sumatra to find a living Saviour, but hand in hand with mass evangelism, there is also a great need to help the local church to equip and send missionaries into the un-reached areas of the island. Therefore we feel the call of God to return to northern Sumatra to establish a long-term work in cooperation with the local churches raising-up leaders and gospel worker for the salvation of people of Sumatra.
