Dire Dawa -APRIL,2000

Dire Dawa is the second largest city in Ethiopia and is located in the eastern part of the country. It has an ancient mystic atmosphere that is influenced from the early settlements of Muslims. The majority of the population is Muslim and 25%Somali. These statistics told us that our work here would be challenging, but we knew that the Blood of Jesus was shed for these people and it must be told to them, no matter the cost.  

Before we started working in this city the Holy Spirit placed in Karl Hargestam's heart to present the Gospel to Dire Dawa in everyway he knew possible. The actual campaign lasted for 3 weeks, the first 2 weeks a live production of "Heavens Gates, Hells flames" was held. We also mobilized ant trained the local churches to street evangelize. With Campus Crusade we trained 4,000 volunteers who passed out 200,000 Gospel tracts and witnessed to thousands of people face to face. Prayer chains were going 24 hours a day. We also held a children's crusade for the street kids and fed the homeless daily. The closing of the crusade was a 4 day campaign held at the local stadium. 

With all these events persecution followed. It was evident that we were under strong spiritual opposition, it seemed everything was fighting against us even the weather. As we continued to press towards our goal of reaching this community our hearts were revived and soon the main topic throughout the town was "Who is this Jesus, that died for my sins." 

Dire Dawa was invaded with the Gospel and hundreds of thousands heard the "Good News". We saw people who have been committed to other religions their whole lives accept Jesus, and in accepting Christ they have been rejected and persecuted by friends and family members. A great work has been done in this city and thousands responded to the Gospel.
